The Global Innovation Fund (GIF) is nonprofit innovation fund headquartered in
London. The GIF invests in social innovations that aim to improve the lives
and opportunities of millions of people in the developing world. GIF supports
breakthrough solutions to global development challenges from social
enterprises, for-profit firms, non-profit organisations, international
organisations and researchers.
The GIF Funds invests in a range of innovations with strong potential for
social impact at a large scale. GIF defines ‘innovation’ broadly to include
new business models, policy practices, technologies, behavioural insights, or
ways of delivering products and services that benefit the poor in developing
countries, any solution that has potential to address an important development
problem more effectively than existing approaches. GIF is interested in
innovations that enable greater social impacts to be achieved compared to
current practices.
The Fund welcomes innovations that address any major development challenge in
any developing country:
1.Organisation type: anyone may apply, including social enterprises,
for-profit companies, non-profit organisations, government agencies,
international organisations, and researchers in any country;
2.Sector: GIF is open to funding innovations in any sector as long as
applicants can show that their innovation improves the lives of those living
on less than US$5.00 PPP per day, especially less than US$2.00 PPP per day;
3.Location: GIF funds innovations implemented in developing countries.
Funding ranging from US$50,000.00 to US$15,000,000.00:
1.Pilot: the innovation is still in an early phase. The maximum GIF can fund
per pilot is US$230,000.00;
2.Test and Transition: the innovation has completed initial testing and is now
transitioning to larger scale. The maximum GIF can fund per intervention is
US$2,300,000.00, although the average investment size is smaller;
3.Scale: the innovation has solid operational, social and financial viability.
The maximum GIF can fund per innovation is US$15,000,000.00, although the
average investment size is much smaller.
